Image Licensing

Standard Licensing

Each agency represented on ImageTrail has their own licensing policies although most are very similar. Common usages that are permitted by all agencies include:

  • Blog and online usage (as long as it doesn't involve resale or distribution)
  • Advertisements
  • Signs and posters
  • Magazine and press release illustrations
  • All kinds of professional documents

Many agencies impose different limits for the number of impressions (or copies) of the image that can be printed. This is not important for most web uses, but postcards and magazines may need what is called an extended license.

Extended License

Most microstock image agencies have both a standard and an extended licensing system. The extended license allows images to be used in way prohibited by the standard license. The most common reasons for needed an extended license are

  1. Extend the number or allowed impressions
  2. Allow use of the image in a web template (resale)
  3. Allow use of the image on products intended for resale

Editorial License

In addition to standard and extended licensing, some agencies now offer an editorial license. These are images that have no model or property releases and can only be used for specific types of projects. Quite often they include celebrities or current events. Below is a look at the Editorial License from Dreamstime.

The editorial section provides news worthy images reflecting events from social, cultural and political scenes. Images downloaded under the
Editorial section of our site, as well as images downloaded with our Royalty Free license can be used within editorial context as long as the current terms are met. Sensitive usage restrictions also apply.

The high-resolution images that you download with the editorial license may be used to illustrate truthful articles or broadcasts appearing in magazines, newspapers or any other editorial context, in either printed or electronic media. Buying the high-resolution image (purchasing the license) does not transfer the copyright. You may not claim that the image is your own and you may not sell, license for use, or in any way distribute the image.

Special ethical considerations apply to editorial usage. When using or submitting editorial images, you are solely responsible for any claims related to or arising from any visual adjustments of the images. Standard manipulation such as cropping the image or regular brightness/contrast corrections are allowed only if doing this will not affect the visual message of the image. We reserve the right to refuse any image submission that we consider as not marketable

In general editorial licensing allow the use of photos that would not normally be allowed to be sold. These appear mainly in media piece or other "non-commercial" works. You should read the license carefully before using editorial images as their are very restrictive.
